Josiah Gilbert was born in Rotherham, the son of Rev. Joseph Gilbert. He studied at the RA schools and Sas's School. Became a portrait painter mainly in pastel and watercolour. Became a highly regarded High Society artist, leaving almost £13,000 when he died in 1892. Exhibited at The Royal Academy, The British Institute, Society of British Artists and the SS.
Represented: National Portrait Gallery, London and The Castle Museum, Nottingham.
