Early Victorian Mahogany Chest of Drawers Attributed to Gillows

19th century
Description

A very impressive early Victorian mahogany chest of drawers attributed to Gillows of Lancaster with figured mahogany to the top and five drawers which are finished with cockbeaded moulding and retain their original beautiful turned rosette knobs. The chest has two reeded tapering columns to the front which terminate to turned vase shaped feet. All the drawers are oak and pine lined and retain their original working VR patent stamped locks which come with a key.

Gillows of Lancaster was founded in 1730 by Robert Gillow who was a cabinet maker and overseas merchant. He had direct access to imported timber from the West Indies and created the finest quality furniture. In 1757 Robert went in to partnership with his son Richard who was an architect. In 1768 Robert retired and his son Robert II joined the family business opening a shop in Oxford Street London. Throughout the Victorian era Gillows of Lancaster and London had a renowned reputation for their quality of work and helped furnish many aristocratic houses.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
