This portrait is very well executed and has to be one of the best portraits the artist Sit Samuel Luke Fildes ever painted.

This really is the most charming work by this British artist that is for sale on the market today.

This is one of a group of superb paintings that are highly sought after , that was executed by Fildes of beautiful young ladies.

Fildes painted many of these images of beautiful young women but this one is one of the finest that you will ever see . This is the standout painting that this artist did. He did another one that is virtually identical that is now on show in the Royal Academy I’ve put a link below so you can see the one in The Royal Academy. The colours on the hat and one or two other minor details differ but it’s virtually identical and is the same lady wearing the same clothing Look here below

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian portraiture is characterised by a focus on realism, emotional depth, and detailed rendering of costume and setting, often reflecting the social standing or ideals of the sitter.

Artists of this era typically used finely ground oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvases, housed within heavily carved and gilded plaster-on-wood frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition, artist signatures, and the age-related crackle or oxidisation in the oil varnish layer.

Pairing a richly framed antique portrait with clean-walled, contemporary interiors creates a striking focal point, balancing historic character with modern minimalism.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, avoid touching the canvas surface, and consult a professional conservator for periodic cleaning and varnish maintenance.
