On discovering this 19th Century student''s sketch, it instantly held my attention. Now its frame has been restored, it has had the same effect on visitors to our gallery, and been much admired. This drawing is very reminiscent of a page from an art student''s portfolio - during the early years of a student''s artistic training, original works could not be submitted, but instead they had to copy old masters and classical subjects. The surface to the paper is not perfect, but these imperfections add to the image''s overall appeal and feeling of antiquity. Housed sympathetically within a wash-lined pale blue mount and mahogany frame.
