Antique silver Rotherhams pocket watch for Carringtons, London.

The watch has an English stem-winding movement, manufactured by Rotherhams for Carringtons, which is working nicely. The movement is signed Carrington & Co, 130 Regent St, London, by Royal appointment, and it is all protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for Birmingham 1899 with a maker’s mark for Rotherhams.

Rotherhams were considered to be an important Coventry watch manufacturer producing 100 units a week, producing an estimated 600,000 movements between 1880 and 1930. While not as prolific as some of the big Swiss and American factories, such as Waltham who produced 26 million in the same period, they were still considered to be among the best English “volume” maker. Rotherhams later diversified into cycle and automobile parts and watch manufacturing ceased in the 1930s.

Overall, the case is in good condition with just the odd minor mark, nothing too serious at all. The hinged case back has very ornate initials, they are difficult to read and look more like a pattern.

The watch glass is light marking but you have to look closely to see it.

The dial is signed Carringtons. Carrington were advertised themselves as jewellers, diamond merchants, dealers in precious stones and manufacturing silversmiths and were proudly awarded various Royal warrants from the UK and Russia.

The dial is in lovely condition and has pin-set blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
