Exquisite 12inch Dial Barometer, Early Victorian

Description

Exquisite example of an early Victorian barometer by J Casartelli, circa 1850.

Large size with 12 inch finely engraved silvered dial with the scale measuring 28-31 inches of barometric pressure and having weather indications on the inner side of the scale circumference. The setting hand is operated by a bone setting disc below the dial & within the rounded base is set a glass fronted spirit level, the silvered back plate engraved “J Casartelli, Liverpool “.

Rounded top with fitted hygrometer and thermometer with silvered scale plate.

Historical note, Giuseppe Luigi Casartelli born 1823 in Tavernerio, northern Italy emigrated with his family in 1834 to Liverpool . Giuseppe changed his name to Joseph Louis & aJoseph excelled in the instrument making business of his family in Liverpool and in 1851 bought out Joshua Ronchetti’s business in Manchester with Joseph becoming an important member of the Community in the city. The Liverpool workshop closed in 1933 being a victim of the Great Depression, the Manchester workshop finally ceased trading in 1989, Joseph himself died in 1900 with his family carrying on his legacy.
