Portrait of a Lady C.1690; 17th Century French School

This portrait is a good example of the type of portrait that was popular in France during the last part of the 17th century and the early part of the 18th. France, during this period, was the leading exponent of fashion and the arts to the rest of Europe and the fashions arose from the French court itself. France was the center for lace-making and silk and brocade manufacturing and its many goods were in high demand in other European countries.

The abundance of drapery, the wide gathered sleeves, the lace, the copious amount of jewellery, and the whiteness of the skin are direct references to wealth; this sitter was likely a member of the French court. The bold resonant colour combination, with the red gown and the azure blue silk mantle, create a striking image. It can be dated from the hairstyle and attire with the side sleeves to circa 1690.
