Large Elegant Modernist Still Life with Fruit on a Table French Antique Oil on Canvas Ca 1950

1940 - 1960
Description

A large and elegant still life with grapes and pears on a table which also features a crisp white bowl and a candlestick. Painted with simplicity, clarity of structure and restrained emotion, this is a superb modernist work by Jean Chauffrey (1911-) dating from

circa 1950.

At the time, Chauffrey had a contract with mythical Paris art dealers Bernheim-Jeune, who promoted and exhibited his work in the post war years.

Bernheim-Jeune had started by presenting works by Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne, Henri-Edmond Cross, Kees van Dongen, Henri Matisse, Le Douanier Rousseau, Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillo.

From 1906 to 1925, art critic Félix Fénéon was the director of the gallery and was instrumental in bringing in the art of Georges Seurat. The gallery became one of the centres of the artistic avant-garde.

Jean Chauffrey had studied in the studio of Lucien Simon, along with other

artists who are favourites of mine, such as Boris Taslitzky, Amrita Sher-Gil and

Andre Hambourg. Chauffrey exhibition widely at the Salon des Tuileries, thé Salon de Mai and the Salon d'Automne.

Measuring 65 x 71 cm, the oil on canvas is signed at the lower left. The overall framed size in a good frame with minor wear is 71 x 91 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century French modernist still life painting emerged in the mid-20th century, combining traditional tabletop subject matter with simplified geometric forms, rich impasto textures, and restrained colour palettes influenced by Post-Impressionism.

Artworks from this period typically feature oil paint applied generously using palette knives or heavy brushes onto woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over timber stretcher frames.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age such as natural canvas oxidisation on the reverse, stretcher frame aging, signature styles typical of the era, and minor craquelure across thick impasto areas.

Position the artwork centrally above a sideboard or console table, pairing it with clean-lined timber furniture or modern ceramics to complement its organic forms and textured background.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources. Dust the surface very gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush without applying water or chemical cleaners.
