Fred Lawson "Redmire Quarry" Wensleydale

Description

This fascinating watercolour by Fred Lawson shows the Quarry at Redmire, near Leyburn in Wensleydale, in 1921. The quarry workers are in front of the remains of Cobscar Hush Lead mine which had been worked up to the 18th century. Cobscar Lead Vein was discovered in 1650 by Nicholas Robinson at the edge of Redmire Scar and Thorny Bank after a rain storm had washed away the top soil revealing the lead vein. The watercolour measures 8"x 11" and is signed lower left and dated 1921. It is mounted and framed giving an overall size of 15"x 18".
