A chrystoleum, or chromo-crystalloleum, is a late 19th-century process designed to turn photographic prints into coloured pictures that mimic oil paintings.

The process uses an albumen print pasted face-down onto the inside of a sheet of convex glass, rendered translucent with oil or wax, and hand-coloured from behind.

Authentic examples feature noticeable physical depth behind convex glass, distinct reverse hand-colouring layers, and Victorian-era framing hardware.
