Superb Large Sultanabad Carpet, Circa 1880, 5.40m X 3.92m

Description

A great decorative carpet needs to have many features. Wonderful colours which are well harmonised, a well-balanced design and good proportions. This carpet has the lot. The repeat design is full of beautifully drawn elements which come together in an harmonious overall composition. Some of the colours are sensational, the greens, yellows and blues in particular. Woven in the Sultanabad region of West Persia in the last quarter of the 19th century, this carpet is a fine example of the Persian Revival Period with repeating palmettes and exotic acanthus leaves. The carpet has sufficient wear to give it the 'lived-in' look, but has been cleaned and is ready for immediate use.

Sultanabad carpets originate from the city of Arak, formerly Sultanabad, in central Persia, renowned for producing high-quality hand-woven textiles since the 19th century. They typically feature large-scale floral motifs, bold heraldic patterns, and balanced colour palettes developed to suit international interiors.

Traditional Sultanabad rugs are woven with hand-spun wool pile onto a cotton or wool foundation warp and weft. The wool yarns are coloured using natural vegetable dyes, yielding characteristic terracotta reds, deep indigo blues, and soft cream tones.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces feature supple wool quality, asymmetrical Persian knots, and a lower knot density relative to formal city weaving, producing a relaxed, spacious motif layout. Inspection of the reverse side often reveals natural dye variations, known as abrash, throughout the field.
