Antique Ziegler Carpet

Description

A rare natural off-white, grey toned wool background on this antique Ziegler carpet, circa 1880, woven in Sultanabad, Persia the home of these famous decorative carpets, the weave and pile is that of this workshop.  Rare smaller size format from this workshop, with an all over design of floral motifs and entwined vines and leaves.  With natural dyes of soft reds, pale blues, golds and sage green colours too.

The history of Ziegler carpets: In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Ziegler carpets were manufactured in Persia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Ziegler & Co., a firm based in Manchester. These carpets were designed specifically for European tastes, featuring muted colour palettes and larger, more open floral patterns than conventional Persian rugs.

Authentic Ziegler carpets are hand-knotted using vegetable-dyed, hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton foundation. The construction employs asymmetric Persian knots, resulting in a flexible weave and a durable pile.
