An exceptional early Ziegler carpet with a fabulous open and large scale design.  Ziegler carpets are famous for their large patterns using palmettes and leaves using the best natural dyes.  Woven circa 1880-1890 the dyes are breathtaking! One of our favourite decorative carpets, the pale blue border and variety of greens and yellows, full of abrash dye change and some lower pile, with all this combined, it creates an ancient beautiful carpet to enhance any room.

Farnham Antique Carpets are specialists in antique decorative carpets, rugs and runners. Varying from antique tribal rugs woven in the Caucasus to classical Persian carpets dating from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century.

Ziegler carpets were developed in the late nineteenth century by Ziegler & Co. in the Arak region of Persia to meet Western tastes, featuring oversized floral scale, muted natural dyes, and softer wool profiles.

Authentic Ziegler rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation.

Authentic pieces display hand-knotted irregularity on the reverse, subtle abrash colour variations from vegetable dyes, and soft, understated floral palmettes rather than harsh geometric repeats.
