Antique Ziegler Carpet

Description

Ancient antique Ziegler carpet, circa 1885 with a beautiful all over palmette and vine design, a deep indigo border colour and ivory background, the rarest colour to find.  Woven in Sultanabad, Persia the home of the famous carpets, the weave and pile is that of this workshop.  Stunning early dyes with greens and pale blues, faded and some low areas of pile and wear apparent.

The history of Ziegler carpets: In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Ziegler carpets were produced in Persia by the Swiss-German firm Ziegler & Co. during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were specifically commissioned to suit Western design preferences, featuring oversized floral scale, muted colour palettes, and softer wool tones compared to traditional Persian carpets.

Authentic Ziegler carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Vegetable dyes were traditionally employed to produce soft, earthy hues such as cream, terracotta, madder red, and indigo blue.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted asymmetrical Persian knots on a flexible cotton foundation with slight irregularities in dye lot and pattern symmetry. They typically feature large-scale floral palmettes without a heavy central medallion, designed specifically for furniture placement.
