Rare Antique Hamadan Carpet

19th century
Description

The colours on this ancient carpet are truly breath-taking! Woven between circa 1860-1870 and using the best natural vegetable dyes, we can see remarkable greens, early aubergine dyes and these saturated pinks and reds are fabulous too!  We believe this to be woven around the Hamadan region of Persia in the North-West, but it is an early example and quite unique, it could even be a Malayer carpet which is in the Hamadan province.  As the weave is very fine and the detailing intricate and beautifully executed.  The border pattern is more in-keeping with Caucasian designs further into Azerbaijan and is so well proportioned and done in a larger scale, which is true to the earlier age of this rare carpet.

The famous 'Herati' design has been used in the main field which consists of a flower centred in a diamond with curving lanceolate leaves located outside the diamond and parallel to each side. There are many versions of this design in different shapes and varying sizes. This design has been stylised through the centuries and is supposed to represent two fish swimming around a water-lily, the design in 19th century carpets depicts two leaves around a flower.

The condition is very good for its age of around 155 years, with minimal old repairs in places, the wool pile height would have been cut low when it was made, to showcase the detailing, this carpet has a lot of life left in it to brighten and enhance a room.  A real masterpiece of ancient weaving, and one of our instant favourites!

It is just as beautiful up close too.....so if you would like to view it at home or in our barn showroom soon do please let us know in your preferred way, we would love to show it to you.

You can also request to reserve this carpet if you do not want to miss out on it, as we often place our rugs on reserve for clients and designers to avoid disappointment.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
