Ancient decorative late 19th century antique Ushak carpet with a reddish to pinkish tone background, with a teal blue toned border.  Combined with yellows, oranges and green tones ths open design is wonderful too.  Which is why we love antique Ushak carpets, there open and large motifs in the design and palette make them decorative antique carpets to furnish with or build a scheme around.  Wear and old restoration is apparent, no holes or major damage to hinder its use, this is an ancient looking carpet which holds immense charm and placing it in a room would add a feel it has lived there for the last 100 years.  Woven over 140 years ago, please view the additional images to see the condition and colours up close.

Ushak carpets originate from the town of Usak in Western Anatolia, Turkey, a major centre of rug production since the Ottoman era. They are characterised by soft colour palettes, large-scale floral or medallion designs, and a slightly looser hand-knotted structure.

Traditional Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Artisans historically used natural vegetable dyes to achieve the muted terracotta, blue, and saffron yellow hues.

Authentic pieces exhibit Ghiordes double knotting, natural colour variations known as abrash, and a softer handle compared to urban Persian rugs. Inspection of the reverse side shows slightly uneven, hand-knotted weave patterns.

An antique Ushak carpet functions as a grounding element in both traditional and modern spaces, anchoring seating arrangements in living rooms or bedrooms. Its warm tones complement neutral upholstery, dark mahogany, or light oak floorboards.
