Antique Angora Ushak Carpet

19th century
Description

Gorgeous late 19th century antique Angora carpet, woven in a small town in Western Anatolia, Ushak, this type of Turkish carpet are known as Angora carpets. The late 19th century weavers came from villages outside of Ushak and employed tribal techniques. Paramount to these techniques was the use of larger knots on these carpets (sometimes less than 30 knots per square inch) and an all-wool foundation.  This is why Ushaks have a soft loose feel and their designs are more often very open.

Woven with faded light greens, pinks and sandy tone dyes, it is perfect for a bedroom, study or drawing room looking for a subtle calm look.  In good original condition, with small areas of wear.  The majority of the carpet has a soft pile showing all over, please view all the additional images to see the condition up close.  A wonderful antique decorative carpet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the city of Usak in western Turkey during the Ottoman era, Ushak carpets are world-renowned for their fine craftsmanship, open-field floral compositions, and central medallion motifs.

These carpets are hand-knotted using soft Angora goat hair or high-grade wool pile tied on a sturdy wool or cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit soft abrash colour variations from natural dyes, a silky sheen from the Angora wool, symmetrical Ghiordes knots, and characteristic muted palettes with central medallion structures.

The soft earth tones and muted palette allow an Ushak rug to anchor contemporary, minimal, or traditional rooms, offering texture without overpowering surrounding furnishings.

Vacuum regularly using a low-suction setting without a rotating brush bar, rotate annually to ensure even wear, and rely exclusively on professional specialist dry cleaners for stain removal.
