Slightly narrow proportion on this beautiful old Fereghan carpet. Made for export to the European market, the design of flowering vines moves as if alive on the exquisitely abrashed navy blue field. There must be 20 different shades of blue, giving a sense of depth to the background. It's a real masterpiece.

Fereghan Ziegler carpets were commissioned in Persia during the late 19th century by the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co., specifically designed for Western interiors with softer colour palettes and larger scale floral motifs.

These carpets are hand-knotted using high-quality hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton foundation, coloured using natural vegetable dyes such as indigo, madder root, and larkspur.
