Farnham Antique Carpets has dated this Antique Sultanabad Carpet to the 1890s.
With varying floral motifs connected with vines, using lovely blues, yellows, reds and balanced well with a soft red/orange border. A beautiful rare pale antique carpet which is very easy on the eye, making it perfect for a drawing room or family room for example.

We can see the original fringes at both ends, the weaves stopped the carpet differently at one end when it was cut off the loom. Amazing to see after 130 years and shows how durable these decorative antique Persian carpets are. It has been used privately for many years in a country home, and we have only had to wash this piece to make it ready to be used again.

Sultanabad carpets are very important in the history of weaving as Sultanabad was formally known as Arak which was once the capital of Persia in the 1800's. Famous carpets such as Ziegler were woven in Sultanabad by the company Ziegler & Co which produced open large floral designs for western tastes and thrived in the late 19th century exporting these carpets to the US and Europe. Sultanabad carpets are know as older better quality Mahals woven from the mid to late 19th century there pile is much flatter than the younger Mahal carpets and using softer colours rather than the typical reds and blues we associate with most Persian carpets.
