Antique Sultanabad Carpet

19th century
Description

A beautiful rare ivory ground antique Sultanabad carpet, with a soft palette and open all over design.  In excellent condition for its age, this decorative elegant design is known as the Mina-Khani pattern.  With varying floral motifs connected with vines, using lovely blues, yellows, reds and balanced well with a soft red/orange border.   A beautiful rare pale antique carpet which is very easy on the eye, making it perfect for a drawing room or family room for example.

We can see the original fringes at both ends, the weaves stopped the carpet differently at one end when it was cut off the loom.  Amazing to see after 130 years and shows how durable these decorative antique Persian carpets are.  It has been used privately for many years in a country home, and we have only had to wash this piece to make it ready to be used again.

Please request a home visit for us to show you this Sultanabad carpet in-situ at a convenient time, we travel all over the UK, and have visited Scotland and Ireland many times over the last 30 years.

Sultanabad carpets are very important in the history of weaving as Sultanabad was formally known as Arak which was once the capital of Persia in the 1800's.  Famous carpets such as Ziegler were woven in Sultanabad by the company Ziegler & Co which produced open large floral designs for western tastes and thrived in the late 19th century exporting these carpets to the US and Europe.  Sultanabad carpets are know as older better quality Mahals woven from the mid to late 19th century there pile is much flatter than the younger Mahal carpets and using softer colours rather than the typical reds and blues we associate with most Persian carpets.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sultanabad carpets originated in the Arak region of Persia during the nineteenth century, produced specifically to meet Western decorative demand. They are recognized for their larger scale, open floral patterns and subtle colour palettes.

Traditional Sultanabad carpets are hand-knotted using natural wool pile spun onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is coloured using plant-based dyes to achieve natural, muted tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit a supple weave, asymmetrical Persian knotting, and characteristic wide borders framing large-scale floral palmettes. Variations in vegetable dye shades, known as abrash, also indicate genuine antique handcrafting.

A Sultanabad carpet serves as a grounding foundational element in both classic and contemporary spaces, anchoring seating arrangements in living rooms or dining areas. Its softer colour scheme complements neutral upholstery and warm wood furniture.

Routine maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar to protect the wool fibres. Accidental spills should be blotted immediately with a clean cloth, and professional cleaning should be performed by a specialist carpet restorer.
