Description

An ancient antique Mahal carpet with a rare natural off-white wool background, the deep blue border compliments it well and allows all the accent colours of red, pale blues, golds and greens to highlight the well drawn pattern.  Beautifully hand woven with great flow and symmetry, this decorative carpet would blend seamlessly into an interior or be wonderful to select fabrics from.

Condition is generally good with some minor wear in places, with our sturdy anti-slip underlay (supplied in the price) this would aid the carpet greatly, as it stops the carpet moving around on the floor adding body to it and preventing wear.

Farnham Antique Carpets are specialists in antique decorative carpets, rugs and runners. Varying from antique tribal rugs woven in the Caucasus to classical Persian carpets dating from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century.

Mahal carpets were produced in the Sultanabad (now Arak) weaving region of Persia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, featuring open floral designs and soft colour palettes.

These carpets are constructed using spun wool pile knotted onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured using vegetable and plant-based dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted asymmetrical construction, subtle colour variation known as abrash, a flexible handle, and a balanced floral pattern without rigid symmetry.
