Antique Mahal Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique Mahal carpet dating from the early 20th century, with wonderful natural and vibrant dyes.  The pale blues, greens and yellows give this antique carpet a joyful feel, the golden yellow border being a particular highlight, a rare border colour too.  More often they would have used a dark blue dye for the border. Professionally cleaned and in original order it is ready to use on the floor.

Not having a central medallion makes this an easy antique carpet to place in a variety of rooms. Woven around circa 1900, the colours have faded beautifully, these decorative carpets from Northern Persia are full of charm and suit country houses to London apartments.  In general the order and condition is extremely good, some minimal areas of lower pile are apparent and could be improved upon by our restoration workshop if required.  We love the lived in look of this antique piece though and with our strong underlay it allows it to be used every day for another 100 years!

Please request a home visit to see this antique Mahal carpet in-situ, you can select a convenient day and time for us to visit your home from our website. Or please feel free to book in a visit to our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey we would love to welcome you here soon.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghan's and Sarouk's, but they are very different in form and structure. More of a cottage industry, they used soft wool with a looser weaver and colourful natural dyes.  With stylised floral motifs and overall designs of vine-scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of famous antique Ziegler carpets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahal carpets originate from the Arak weaving region in central Persia, woven predominantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are recognized for their supple weave, large-scale floral motifs, and balanced all-over repeating patterns.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile colored with natural vegetable dyes, woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft structure. The weave is typically medium in density, giving the finished textile a soft and pliable handle.

Authenticity is indicated by subtle variations in vegetable dye shades, known as abrash, along with natural wear patterns and asymmetric Persian knots. An original piece will feature a flexible cotton backing and an organic flow to the repeating pattern.

A large Mahal carpet acts as an ideal anchor in a drawing room or dining area, harmonising with dark wood antiques or contrasting against contemporary furniture. The deep crimson hues add warmth and character when set against neutral walls and timber floors.

Vacuum regularly without using a rotating brush bar to protect the wool fibres, and rotate the carpet annually to ensure balanced exposure to light and foot traffic. Clean liquid spills by blotting immediately with a neutral dry cloth, and seek specialist cleaning for deep maintenance.
