Antique Mahal Carpet

19th century
Description

Woven over 130 years ago with a beautiful small scale all over floral design, this antique Mahal carpet is full of rare green/blue dyes, with no central medallion, this would be easy to place in a variety of rooms.  Woven around circa 1890-1900 the colours have faded beautifully, these decorative carpets from Northern Persia are full of charm and suit country houses to London apartments.

Green is one of the rarest dyes in antique carpets, as this was expensive to produce and a sacred colour, rarely do we come across examples such as this with so much green and pale blues, changing from light greens up to deeper shades of turquoise tones.  The changes in the dye we can see, are due to different batches of wool being used, these wonderful variations add so much depth to an antique carpet, known as abrash, we can also see subtle changes to the soft red border.

Condition is very good too, no damage or marks to speak of.  Also you will see from the additional images that this carpet is almost one of a pair!  Unbelievably we have another Mahal carpet woven with the same design and colours, slightly smaller in size and we obtained these carpets from the same collection.  So we believe these carpets were commissioned in these rare colours in the late 19th century to sit or work together in rooms close by in a large home.

Book in a showroom visit by appointment or request to view this rare blue/green antique Mahal carpet at home soon.  Or please request a home visit, we travel all over the UK showing our carpets and rugs in-situ to help you select the ideal carpet for your home.

You can also reserve this beautiful antique carpet and arrange a home viewing or view it at our barn showroom soon.  If you are an interior designer, you are very welcome to reserve this Mahal carpet for your project too.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahal carpets originate from the Sultanabad region of central Persia, produced predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are renowned for their supple weave, large-scale floral patterns, and expressive spatial arrangements suitable for traditional and contemporary interiors.

These carpets feature hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a cotton warp and weft foundation using traditional asymmetrical knots. Natural plant-based dyes, such as indigo and madder, create characteristic colour variations known as abrash across the surface.

Authenticity is recognised through subtle dye variations, natural wear patterns consistent with age, and a soft, pliable backing without synthetic adhesives or rigid backing materials. Examining the reverse side reveals individual hand-tied knots and minor variations typical of artisanal production.

A patterned Mahal carpet serves as an anchor in living areas or dining rooms, softening minimalist architecture or complementing period timber furnishings. Muted tones within the weave allow it to bridge diverse colour schemes effortlessly.

Regular light vacuuming without a rotating beater bar prevents fibre breakdown, while periodic rotation ensures even exposure to sunlight and foot traffic. Professional dry cleaning and a quality underlay protect the wool pile and warp structure from wear.
