Antique Mahal Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderful 'Sunburst' design on this soft toned and interesting antique Mahal carpet woven on a soft pink to terracotta background.  This design we often see on Caucasian rugs such as Zejwa or Chelaberd rugs, it is rare to see it on a large scale on a Persian antique carpet.

It works extremely well as a large geometric design and the variation of beautiful colours from oranges, reds, greens and blues to yellows and off white stone colours.  The border of deep blue indigo balances the composition really well and adds warmth to the carpet.  Condition is fairly good,  with a finer weave than most Mahal carpets, some areas of lower pile are apparent and scattered in places. This carpet has already been used on a floor for over 100 years and is showing some wear. Supplied with our excellent underlay this would add body and stop the carpet from moving on the floor, it also aids wear, as most wear comes from movement.

We love to help customers and interior designers source the ideal carpet for a room, if this beautiful antique Mahal carpet is of interest to you please request a home visit to arrange a time to view it in-situ.  We travel all over London and the UK & Europe showing our carpets in customers homes, a free, professional, no obligation service we have offered since 1990.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahal carpets originate from the Sultanabad region of Persia, produced predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are recognised for their wide-spaced floral motifs, geometric medallions, and balanced palettes, making them staple textiles in traditional and classical interiors.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Dyes derived from natural plant and mineral sources were used to create the distinct earthy reds, blues, and creams.

Authentic pieces display subtle colour variations known as abrash due to natural dye batches, a soft wool pile, and a clear, hand-knotted reverse structure without modern latex or synthetic backing.

A traditional Mahal carpet serves as a grounding element in contemporary or transitional spaces, anchoring minimalist or neutral furniture with warm tones and classic geometric-floral patterning.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush to protect the pile. Position quality underlay beneath the carpet to minimise wear, rotate periodically for uniform light exposure, and utilise specialist hand-cleaning services when required.
