Antique Mahal Carpet

19th century
Description

A finely woven antique Mahal carpet from 1890-1900 in fabulous condition, an excellent wool pile all over and with a beautifully drawn and woven all over design.  The green dyes are a particular highlight of the palette, on the deep indigo blue background they really lift the whole carpets feel and combined with lovely red and off white tones, this makes a decorative carpet to place in any rooms.

A great size too this would be ideal for a drawing room or dining room for example, having lived in a dining room for many years, it looked wonderful with an oak table on it.  Professionally washed, the pile is fantastic and ready to be used for another 100 years.

This carpet has been in an important private collection for over 20 years and is fresh to the market.  A unique opportunity to purchase a Tabriz carpet of this quality and in outstanding original condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahal carpets originate from the Arak region in central Persia, woven predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are defined by their supple weave, hand-spun wool, and spacious floral designs, often featuring all-over palmettes rather than formal central medallions.

These carpets are hand-knotted using wool pile tied onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The yarn is traditionally dyed using natural vegetable and mineral sources, producing soft colour variations across the pile.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregular hand-knotted knotting patterns on the reverse side, natural colour abrash (colour variation in the dye), and soft, flexible foundations. Unlike machine-made alternatives, the design appears clearly on the back of the carpet, and the fringes are natural extensions of the warp threads.

A Mahal rug serves as a foundational textile in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Designers pair navy and terracotta colour schemes with neutral linen upholstery, dark wood furniture, or modern minimalist accent pieces to create visual depth.

Regular care involves gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to prevent pile damage. Spillages should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional cleaning by an antique rug specialist is recommended every few years.
