Description

An unusual 'Sunburst' design on this vibrant and interesting antique Mahal carpet woven on an ivory background colour. This design we often see on Caucasian rugs such as Zejwa or Chelaberd rugs, it is rare to see it on a large scale on a Persian antique carpet. It works extremely well as a large geometric design and the variation of beautiful colours from oranges, reds, greens and blues to yellows and pale greys. The border of deep blue indigo balances the composition really well and adds warmth to the carpet. In good condition in general with a finer weave than most Mahal carpets, some areas of lower pile are apparent in places. This does add in many ways to the carpets charm and with high quality underlay we supply it would be very durable for many many years. Especially as this carpet has already been used on a floor for over 100 years we know antique Persian carpets have stood the test of time.

Antique Mahal carpet

Mahal carpets originate from the Arak region in central Persia, produced primarily during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are characterised by expressive, large-scale geometric or floral motifs, a supple weave, and a wide palette using natural vegetable dyes.

Traditional Mahal carpets feature hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is historically coloured using organic dyes derived from plants, insects, and minerals to create resilient hues.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted irregularity on the reverse side, natural colour variations known as abrash, and soft, durable wool. Unlike modern machine-made replicas, genuine antique carpets display soft fringe integration woven directly into the foundation warp.

Designers frequently place Mahal carpets in contemporary or traditional living rooms to anchor seating arrangements. The complex geometric field patterns and muted palette offer visual structure beneath neutral upholstery or wooden floorboards.

Regular maintenance requires suction-only vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to protect the wool fibres. Professional cleaning should be undertaken by wool specialists using low-moisture methods, and the carpet should be rotated periodically to ensure even wear.
