Antique Sultanabad Carpet

19th century
Description

Beautiful Antique Sultanabad carpet, from the late 19th century with the softest natural colours and a rare green border and natural off white main field colour.  Soft terracotta tones used for the flowing vines, a very handsome decorative antique carpet woven around 130 years ago.

Sultanabad carpets are very important in the history of weaving as Sultanabad was formally known as Arak which was once the capital of Persia in the 1800's. Famous carpets such as Ziegler were woven in Sultanabad by the company Ziegler & Co which produced open large floral designs for western tastes and thrived in the late 19th century exporting these carpets to the US and Europe.

We offer the service of viewing any of our antique carpets & rugs in-situ anywhere in the UK by appointment.  We have visited customers at home showing our carpets for over 30 years to help you make the right choice.  Request a home visit to organise a time and day that is convenient for you.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sultanabad carpets, produced in the Arak region of Persia starting in the late 19th century, are recognised for their larger weave, supple handle, and grand-scale classical floral patterns set against soft colour palettes.

They are traditionally hand-knotted using local hand-spun wool pile on a durable cotton foundation, dyed with natural vegetable dyes that yield subtle variations in tone known as abrash.

Authentic pieces feature a coarser asymmetrical knotting technique compared to city weaves, displaying large-scale palmettes, vine scrolls, and a characteristic muted palette featuring terracottas, ivories, and soft greens.

These carpets pair well with both contemporary minimal furnishings and traditional wooden antiques, providing grounded texture and historical character without overpowering the modern room scheme.

Regular light vacuuming without a rotating beater bar, prompt spot cleaning with cold water, and periodic professional hand-washing by a specialist rug restorer will preserve the fibres and natural dyes.
