Description

An unusual satinwood breakfront side cabinet of particularly shallow proportions, just 11 inches deep.

This fine quality side cabinet was probably recreated in Edwardian times using the base of a fine Georgian bookcase. A green marble top was added as were the brass Egyptian capitols and feet, and some brass stringing. It makes an immensely practical cabinet for a hallway because of it's exceptionally shallow size and is almost indistinguishable from a genuine Georgian piece that would now command a very significant price. (It was last sold in 1971 by Maples in Tottenham Court Road and described as an original dating to circa 1790 (Invoice included). Valued by Christies London in 1990 at £5,000 - £8,000, (Valuation included).

It has come straight from a private collection where it was always believed to be completely genuine. It has not been restored but is in generally good condition with some signs of age. The pleated fabric in the doors has some stains and the marble has been broken and almost invisibly restored - see photos.
