Title: " In the Quarry".

Signed. circa 1910.

Watercolour and gouache.

Size: 11 1/4"x 16". Framed size: 21 1/4"x 25 1/2".

An extremely fine example of the artist's Staithes era work.

Now cleaned and framed.

In very good ready to hang condition. Free UK delivery.

James William Booth R.Cam.A. (1867-1953). A member of the Staithes Group who studied art at Manchester under E.M. Bancroft. He is noted for his horse subjects and like the artist John Atkinson, favoured painting horse fairs, harvesting scenes, ploughing scenes and quarry scenes. He exhibited prolifically at the Royal Cambrian Academy as well as other Yorkshire institutes.

The Staithes Group was an artists collective active in North Yorkshire between 1894 and 1909. Influenced by French Impressionism and the plein air movement, artists painted outdoors using loose brushwork, earthy tonal palettes, and subjects focused on coastal and rural working life.

Artists typically painted on heavy cotton rag paper using transparent and opaque watercolour pigments. Works were executed outdoors directly from observation before being mounted on acid-free card and framed behind protective glass.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate paper aging, distinctive monogrammed or signed signatures, and evidence of original mounting. Provenance records, exhibition labels on the reverse, and stylistic consistency with documented works also assist authentication.
