A delightful silhouette encased in an original wooden frame.
 
Portrait Silhouettes became fashionable in the Georgian period, when they were called ''shades''. The earliest silhouettists were portrait miniaturists looking to expand their clientele by producing a cheaper alternative. Silhouettes were popular as mementoes to be given away. Most silhouettes were cut from lightweight black cardboard and mounted on a pale background. The word silhouette derives from Etienne de Silhouette, a French Finance Minister.
 
Condition: Good. Some wear to the robust frame as is to be expected over time. The cardboard backing is evidently a replacement.
