Carse Antiques has dated this piece to the 17th Century.
The top has had some later Georgian restoration including the hinges and the seperate piece along the back. The original pin hinge holes are in the base as you would expect. I would imagine at some point in the early 18th century someone has let the lid fall back which has caused the damage. There is a small old repair to the back right hand stile.

The lock plate is original on the front as is all the carving which is superb. The coffer shines like glass with waxed finish and deep original patination.
Although not 100% right this is a lovely looking piece of early oak of a VERY RARE small size.
