Rare Antique Roskopf Patent 'Yoga' Pocket Watch

Rare antique Roskopf patent pocket watch.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement, visible through an inner inspection window, which is working nicely and keeping time to around five minutes over 24 hours. The movement is signed Roskopf Patent and it has the patent number 30353 which relates to a 1904 patent in the name of the inventor and applicant Charles Leon Schmid.

Charles Leon Schmid had a strong connection with Roskopf watches. In February 1867 Schmid was hired by Roskopf to sell watches, with a target of five to six hundred watches per month. Schmid had the inspired idea to offer the watches to different European armies and railroad companies and his strategy was so successful that demand could not be met.

This particular watch measures 52mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is nickel and the case back has the Roskopf Patent mark. There is a fairly minor indentation to the hinged case back and small surface marks but nothing too serious.

The glass lens has a small chip to the very edge but otherwise is in good condition.

The dial is signed S C Khushdil & Co, Meerut, which is an Indian city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, possibly the original retailer of the watch. Below that is an image of a yogi in the Lotus position and the name S D Nand, Sy, possibly a yoga teacher or philosopher. The hands are pinset.
