FAQs

Chinese soapstone seals, often used by scholars and officials, served as personal signatures and marks of ownership on calligraphy and paintings, reflecting the high status of literati culture.

These pieces are carved from pyrophyllite or soapstone, a soft mineral prized in China for its workability, allowing artisans to execute intricate details using traditional hand-chiselling tools.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit natural mineral inclusions, a smooth patination from handling over centuries, hand-carved tool marks, and appropriate wear consistent with age rather than modern mechanical precision.

Such objects work effectively as focal points on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece, where their sculptural form and cultural history can be appreciated in proximity to books and neutral backdrops.

Soapstone is a relatively soft stone that can be scratched easily; it should be kept away from harsh chemicals, extreme temperature fluctuations, and direct sunlight, requiring only occasional dusting with a soft, dry cloth.
