Antique silver H Samuel pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a key wound movement by the Lancashire Watch Company, made for H Samuel, which is working nicely. The movement is signed with H Samuel's address and the Lancashire Watch Company logo. The movement is protected by an inner fitted cover.

Harriet Samuel took over her father-in-law's clock-making business in 1862 in Liverpool, she renamed the business H Samuel and moved the business to Manchester's Market Street where she ran the company as a mail order business.

Later on, Harriet’s son concentrated on the retail side of the business, and the first H Samuel retail store opened in Preston in 1890, closely followed by branches in Rochdale and throughout Lancashire. Since then the company has become nationwide with branches in many British High Streets today.

The watch measures 52mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two back covers for Chester 1894 with a case maker's mark for Thomas Peter Hewitt of The Lancashire Watch Company. The case has some surface marking but overall it is in nice condition for an 1890s piece. The loop is a later replacement although antique. The inside of the back cover also has an inscription, possibly the name of a previous owner.

The watch glass is in nice condition.

The off-white dial is signed H Samuel, Manchester. The dial has several very faint hairline cracks although hardly noticeable to the naked eye. Blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

The watch comes with a single silver chain by the Birmingham chain makers Henry Allday & Son and it is hallmarked for 1884. The chain measures 32cm long including the T-bar and the clasp, and weighs 27.6g.

The watch and chain will be sent in a new presentation box.
