Fine quality early C19th George IV period "Wellington" chest of drawers in rare Gonçalo Alves timber.

Exceptional 7-drawer Wellington chest of good proportions and scale , in striking and rare imported Brazilian Gonçalo Alves , often referred to as "Tiger wood" .

The 7 graduated drawers all fitted with their original turned wooden knob pulls . The drawers locked by the folding upright bar to the right-hand-side which secures the whole chest.

The top of the stile to each side surmounted by a well-carved and executed acanthus scroll corbel . The highly-figured top with a simple square block edge echoing the architectural form, and the whole raised on a plinth base . The reverse with original panelled back-boards.

Superb quality of construction throughout with finely-cut hand-made dovetails to the mahogany-lined drawers .

The use of the rare and exotic Brazilian Gonçalo Alves timber combined with the quality of manufacture and design , point to a strong attribution to the esteemed and illustrious firm of cabinet-makers , Gillows of Lancaster . The firm were known to favour the use of this arrestingly-figured timber during this period , and numerous documented items are illustrated and discussed in "Gillows of Lancaster & London" by Susan E. Stuart Vols.I and II.

Though unmarked or stamped , as many Gillows pieces were , we feel confident that this is a highly probable conclusion and attribution .

In excellent original condition, with a striking colour and rich patination .
