Antique Rotherhams Pocket Watch, Dunedin Railway

Antique silver Rotherhams pocket watch, 1903, Dunedin Railways.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed Rotherhams London, and it is protected by an inner hinged cover. The cover has a previous owner's details scratched into it, 'E Steel, Railways, Dunedin, 1882'.

The Dunedin Railway Station in New Zealand was built on Dunedin’s wealthy inheritance from the gold rush days. During the city’s most prosperous years this railway station was the country’s busiest, handling up to 100 trains each day. Construction began in 1903 and the station was officially opened in 1906 so E Steel would have been the original owner of this pocket watch.

The 1882 date is a bit of a puzzle, migrant ships docked in Dunedin in 1882 so could be related to that but we are guessing.

The watch measures 57mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case backs for Birmingham 1903, with a maker's mark for John Rotherham.

The case has a small knock to the side, and some wear to the edge of the case back. When the case back is opened, there is silver solder around the edge, this is an old repair which was designed to re-enforce and strengthen the case back.

The watch glass is in good condition.

The signed dial is in lovely condition and has its original pin-set hands, sunken subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
