Frederick Brill (1920-1984).
Frederick Brill was associated with Chelsea School of Art for over thirty years.
His copy (at the age of sixteen) of the Michelangelo in the National Gallery (No.1) and his Italian sketchbooks illustrate his considerable powers of perception and great skills in recording.
His interest in the Pennines had been aroused during the war years by being evacuated, with the Royal College of Art, to Ambleside. The acquisition of a house in Carperby, Wensleydale in 1967 allowed this passion for the Yorkshire Dales to develop.
When Fred (as he was affectionately known to all) moved permanently to Yorkshire, Carperby became the focus for works ranging from broader Pennine landscapes to personal studies made within the village. These later landscape studies lead naturally on to the still-lifes which were still in progress when illness sadly overtook him.
Draughtsmanship is, perhaps, the most dominating feature of Fred's work and the bold brush strokes reflect his own robust presence and large personality
