Welsh Oak Tallboy Chest-on-chest, Dated 1833

19th century
Description

Welsh chest-on-chest in beautiful mellowed and figured native oak. The upper section has a bold cornice above a carved and inlaid frieze containing a pair of secret drawers, over a row of three small drawers above three larger graduated drawers, flanked by fluted canted corners, over a base with three further drawers raised on tall shaped bracket feet.

Wonderful colour and surface finish.

Carmarthenshire, west Wales, dated 1833.

This piece is typical of West Wales and has added interest and importance because of its inscriptions. Inside the lowest drawer of the top section is the following pencilled inscription:

"John James made this June 28th 1833...for Mary James 1833"

On the top of the base is the carved inscription:

"MxI 1833"

This chest has descended from Mary James within a farming family from Cynwyl Elfed, Carmarthenshire. The maker, John James, has been identified as a carpenter and cabinet-maker working in Drefach-Felindre in the same county (see "Welsh Furniture: A Cultural History of Craftsmanship and Design", Vol 2 pp.280-283)
