Longines Pocket Watch and Chain, Cuervo Y Sobrinos

1900 - 1920
Description

Longines pocket watch and chain, Cuervo Y Sobrinos.

The watch has a stem-winding movement, calibre 18.79, which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Longines name and the serial number 1,976,077 dates it back to 1907. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 47mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold plated and it is in lovely condition.

The lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed Longines, Cuervo Y Sobrinos, Unicos Importadores. There are some short very faint hairline cracks towards the bottom of the dial. Breguet style hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

Cuervo Y Sobrinos was founded in Cuba in 1882 by Don Ramon and the company went on to become the most successful jeweller and watch maker of the Latin world. Pieces signed with the Cuervo Y Sobrinos name became so sought after that well known watch companies such as Rolex, Vacheron and Longines (as we have here) began producing watches to be sold in Don Ramon's shops.

Cuervo Y Sobrinos translates as Cuervo & Nephews as the business passed down through the family, and the company expanded with concerns in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Germany and North America. It was said that Clark Gable, Ernest Hemmingway and Winston C hurchill were all customers.

In the 1950s, with the advent of the Cuban revolution, the Cuervo familyhad to flee their shop taking only what they could carry. Their shop was locked up with the stock in locked steel vaults, and it was to remain this way for the next 40 years. In 1997, an Italian entrepreneur gained access to the vaults and the result was a relaunch of the Cuervo name with designs based on the findings of the safe contents.

The watch comes with a single chain, 29cm long including the clasps.

The watch and chain will be sent in a new presentation box.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
