Description:

This is a fine quality antique Victorian colonial teak and brass military campaign two-part chest of drawers, of small rare proportions, circa 1840, in good original condition, originating from India or the Far East. Constructed of solid teak with a single piece top with gallery up-stand and reeded carcass below, it features the original recessed brass handles, with brass corner brackets and further brass strap-work. The gallery up-stand would have been used to steady items on top of the chest whilst in transit. The chest also boasts lovely sturdy brass side carrying handles. The brass corner brackets and brass straps were used to protect the chest whilst in transit during campaigns. The drawers are constructed of solid teak with hand-dovetailed drawer linings; the back also retains its original teak backboards. The drawers are in good working order, they are clean inside and close flush to the frame. The drawers also benefit from the original working brass lever locks (with working key). The chest stands on its original fixed bulbous turned feet. The chest divides into two sections for easy transportation. Chests that were constructed in the colonies, such as this one, were usually constructed of solid teak. The chest benefits from a rich brown teak colour, with a wonderful grain configuration to the front and sides, having been polished in our workshops.

Condition Report:

This military chest is in good original condition having been polished in our workshops. There are nominal old use marks to the leading edges, top and corners but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chest features the original brass inset handles. All the hand dovetailed drawers close flush to the frame. The drawers incorporate working brass lever locks (with working key). The chest retains its original fixed bulbous turned feet and original teak backboards. The chest benefits from a lovely rich brown teak colour and a wonderful grain configuration to the top, front and sides. This item is well made, solid in joint and ready to use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
