Description:
Here is a fine quality decorative antique French provincial rustic solid chestnut workbench, circa 1870, in good original condition. Constructed with a thick two-plank slab top, secured with cleated ends. The cleats are secured to the top with tongue-and-groove joints and metal bolts. It is nice to see that the bench retains its original working wood and metal vice. The iron mechanism is fully functional and the extent to which the vice can be opened is governed by a peg which fits into a holed, sliding bar towards the base of the vice. The peg can be moved to a different hole, thus changing how far the vice can be opened. The workbench is raised on four sturdy block legs, which are united by a two-plank pot board- shelf below, ideal for use as a storage shelf. The workbench would make an ideal sideboard or serving / side table in the kitchen, hallway or any shop. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
Condition Report:
This workbench is in good original condition. The top and leading edges show signs of use in terms of scratches and knocks, but nothing significant considering the age and purpose it was intended for. The table retains its original working vice. As it boasts the original finish, it has a fantastic colour and rustic patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The workbench is solid in joint and ready to use.
