Portrait Of A Lady C.1722; Attributed To Joseph Sibon (d.1731)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
The sitter in this portrait has been elegantly depicted wearing a crimson dress and a flowing azure wrap. The voluminous sleeves are held in place with a large diamond brooch of which there is another on the bodice.
The style of portrait was made famous in France during the reign of Louis XIV. French born court painter Antoine Pesne excelled at this style; artists such as him working in European capitals enabled the French influence in all the arts to proliferate. The reverse contains an inscription with the artist’s name (Sibon) and date 1722. Joseph Sibon is thought to have been born in Toulon France where he worked as early as 1707. The Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux has a work by him signed and dated 1730, one year prior to his death (in Bordeaux).
Contained in a good quality 18th century carved hardwood frame.
Bibliography: Duverdier S., Research on painting in Bordeaux in the eighteenth, 1985, Master''s thesis presented at Bordeaux III, under the direction of P. R...oudié, (T. I, P. 69)
