French Paris Street Scene, Notre Dame Cathedral, Antique Oil by Francois Gall's Maurice Fallies , Circa 1930-40

1920 - 1940
Description

Activity in front of Notre Dame Cathedral by Maurice Falliès (French, 1883-1965,), an artist who specialised in Paris street scenes. His work was recently shown at the Musée de l'Ile de France/Chateau de Sceaux, alongside the likes of Caillebotte and Signac.

Maurice Failles studied with Francois Gall - it is said he left some of his paintings unsigned so as to create a doubt whether he, or Francois Gall had painted a certain artworks!

Our painting however - an oil on paper mounted on to board by the artist himself - is signed at the lower right. Painted circa 1935-40, it measures 38 x 55 cm. The overall size with a vintage natural wood frame is 45 x 58 cm

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century French Impressionist cityscapes typically feature loose brushwork, atmospheric lighting, and everyday urban scenes. Artists often depicted iconic Parisian monuments, bustling boulevards, and architectural elements using a muted or earthy colour palette.

Paintings from this period were predominantly created using oil pigments on stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were typically carved or moulded timber, often finished with painted washes, gilding, or gesso coatings.

Authentic works can be identified by examine the natural age-related oxidisation of the canvas stretcher, artist signatures, consistent craquelure in the paint surface, and authentic wear on the reverse of the frame.

A Parisian cityscape painting can be displayed above a console table or sideboard to create a focal point. Pairing classic framed oil art with contemporary furniture provides a balanced contrast between modern and historic aesthetics.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding commercial chemical solvents or liquid cleaners.
