Superb Quality Mid 19thc Anglo Indian Padouk Pedestal Sideboard of Superb Patina

Superb quality mid 19th century Anglo Indian padouk inverted breakfront pedestal sideboard of superb patina (colour) from Bombay or Southern India.

This sideboard consists of a finely carved back-splash with central anthemion design with scrolling decoration to either side and carved thistle and foliage designs.

This leads down to the solid padouk top, of inverted form, with gadrooned edge.

Underneath the top are three horizontal drawers; a longer central drawer with a smaller drawer to either side, these being positioned above each of the pedestals.

The drawers are also lined in padouk and are profusely carved to the front with foliage and rosette decoration which also carries around to the sides of the top.

The top is supported by two rectangular pedestals each having opening doors with superbly carved design resembling a 'pedestal' to the front, typical of Anglo Indian pieces.

This design has a carved central sunburst with central rosette with carved capital and gadrooned decoration below.

The doors have a locking mechanism positioned on the inner side of the pedestals, one cupboard has a cellarette and the other a shelf to the interior.

Underneath the pedestals is a carved gadrooned moulding leading down to eight carved gadrooned feet.

The sunburst decoration is a typical feature on Anglo Indian furniture of this period particularly from the Bombay area, possibly influenced from the pleated fabric designs in Regency furniture.

A similar design pedestal sideboard can be seen in the book 'Furniture from British India & Ceylon' by Amin Jaffer pages 389/390 plate 196

This sideboard is in very good condition, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
