Description:
Here is an impressive quality antique French Louis Philippe flame mahogany and marble chest of drawers, circa 1850, in good original condition. The chest of drawers retains its original stunning Italian grey marble top, which displays lovely grey tones, with natural veining and speckles. The marble top is freestanding on the chest of drawers. With a cushion-fronted drawer above, there are three flat fronted drawers below. The drawer fronts boast stunning top quality mirror matched flame mahogany veneers, with the original brass key escutcheons and lever locks. The chest also retains its original key. Inside, the drawers are lined and hand dovetailed in solid chestnut. The chest incorporates chamfered corners, with a fine moulded beading to the frame and plinth, decorated with trailing acanthus leaf carvings in the top corners (underneath the cushion fronted drawers) and scroll carvings in the bottom corners of the front of the chest. The back of the chest is constructed from solid chestnut. The bottom of the chest incorporates a cushion plinth, which rests on turned feet at the front and block feet at the rear.

This style of French chest was designed without drawer handles in order to accentuate its clean simple lines. The drawers were designed to be opened by pulling on the key.
Condition Report:
This chest of drawers is in good condition. Nominal old use to the leading edges and drawer fronts, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The original marble top is also in good original condition with nominal old use marks. The marble is not cracked. Please note, the marble is freestanding on the chest; it was not designed to be glued to the chest of drawers below. The dovetailed chestnut lined drawers are smooth running and close flush to the frame. They also feature the original brass escutcheons and lever locks with the original working key. Nominal old use marks to the drawer bottoms. The chest possesses its original turned feet and backboards. As the chest boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic rich colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
