Portrait of a Lady, France C.1720, Oil on Canvas

18th century
Description

This portrait eloquently depicts a sophisticated lady and is striking in its portrayal of the sumptuous fabrics and their decorative richness. The detailed embroidery on the décolletage and the jewelry has been well observed and painted with finesse. The soft modelling of the features and the slight turn of the head add to its overall appeal and attractiveness. An inscription on verso states ‘Prouancal fecit’ which implies an artist or area.

This beautiful sitter is wearing a fortune in jewels. Pearls and diamonds are incorporated into the hair jewelry, earings, onto the bodice, and the brooch clasp on the mantle.

Understandably, works of this age have often undergone in depth restoration. A unique trait of this portrait is that it is relatively untouched and evidence of the great care it has received. It retains its original wood stretcher and because it has not undergone a lining process (or requiring one) the delightful impasto technique can be appreciated and has not been flattened over time. A very beautiful portrait held in a period carved and gesso frame.
