Portrait Of A Gentleman; Flemish C.1610, Oil On Canvas

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Titan Fine Art

In this early portrait the sitter has been depicted to celebrate and emphasise their importance. The sumptuous black fabrics, a colour that was most expensive to produce at the time, and the white Reticella lace collar and matching wrist ruffs were only afforded by the upper echolons of society. The gentleman is steadying a rapier in his left arm whilst his other arm rests on a table with a high brimmed hat. To add an element of drama and interest the artist has included a drapped curtain which has been pulled back to give an effect of ‘revealing’ the sitter whilst the upper left contains an identifying coat of arms.

The ‘propaganda’ portrait was popular at the time when status was immensely important. An interesting, very early and good quality portrait.

Measurements: Height 104cm, Width 85cm framed (Height 41”, Width 33.5” framed)
