Portrait of a Lady C.1779; Circle of Johann Heinrich Tischbein (1722-1789)

Elegantly presented, this is an intimate portrayal of a young lady circa 1779. The sitter is adorned with lace, a blue ribbon choker, and other usual rococo accoutrements. An inscription on verso may relate to the Rühle von Lilienstern family, who are an old aristocratic German family that were first enobled in 1743. The family seat was Bedheim Castle (see photo).

Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (1722-1789) was from a German family of artists who between the early 18th century and the late 19th produced no less than 28 artists and artisans (a third of them women). The family were active throughout Europe and their portrait work contributed to the transition in German art from the Late Baroque and Rococo to Neo-classicism and early naturalism. In 1753 Johann was appointed court painter to William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel.
