Exquisite half length portrait of an elegant lady seated in an interior. The scale imbues an intimate feel which was very popular at the time. Female beauty was much prized in the 19th Century. For the first time, large numbers of pictures were painted whose sole raison d’être was a depiction of such beauty; not so much in the form of specific portraiture, but more as a homage to feminine beauty in its own right and many artists worked in this genre.

Eduard Niczky was a German painter, the son of an engineer from Kassel, who attended the Kassel Kunstakademie. He studied at the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Arts. His poetic and rustic subjects, and particularly his fancy ‘keepsake’ portraits of young beautiful woman are found in many famous collections. He died in 1919 in Munich Germany.
