Large 18th century English school bust length portrait of a cleric, presented in a black robe, white band, and expensive powdered wig, feigned oval. The neckwear (called a falling band) was worn by academics and lawyers as well as the clergy. From the mid 17th century bands were plain and white and became the neck-wear for legal, official, ecclesiastical and academical persons. A strong portrayal of character and a good example from the period. Held in a good quality antique swept frame.
