A Good Georgian Bow Front Mahogany Corner Display Stand/wash Stand with Rare Fold Down Top. Circa 1790

19th century
For Sale by Atropos Antiques
Description

A rare georgian mahogany, bow front corner wash stand with a clever fold down top with boxwood and ebony stringing. Cupboard and drawer below with brass lions head handles.

Originally designed to be used as a washstand with occasional work or display surface facilitated by an ingenious fold down top. This gallery or splashguard engages when lifted with an oak slat which supports it from behind.

All the original cut outs for wash bowl and accoutrements are extant and this would be delightful with a contemporary blue and white wash set in place especially in a period bedroom, however, with the top down this small piece of furniture works very well in any room in the house and I have seen these used to great effect as drinks cabinets!

Overall height with gallery up. 48 inches.

Ditto with gallery down. 32 inches.

Overall width. 24 inches.

Declaration

Atropos Antiques has dated this Georgian Mahogany Corner Washstand to the 1800s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th century, a Georgian corner washstand is a compact item of furniture constructed to fit into room corners, historically designed to hold a pitcher and washbasin for personal hygiene.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from timbers such as mahogany, featuring dovetail joints, boxwood stringing inlays, and brass hardware including ring handles and lion-mask plates.

Authentic period examples display hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-cut dovetails, irregular original screw threads, and natural wood shrinkage consistent with two centuries of age.

In contemporary interiors, these corner stands serve as decorative display tables for modern ceramics, plant stands, or compact side tables in unused room corners.

Preserve the timber surface by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the item away from radiators and direct sunlight.
